Cutting Silhouettes for Weddings

On June 11 I cut silhouettes at a beautiful garden wedding reception for a wonderful couple, Kendra and Matt. I cut two copies of each guest's silhouette, one when into the guest book to be signed by the sitter and the other was matted for the sitter to take home as a souvenir.

I even cut a special couple's silhouette while I was waiting to leave as a gift. The bride, groom and guests were all very pleased/impressed with the experience as well as their likenesses.

Went to visit my sister Becky in England the week before the Royal Wedding. Tried to keep a visual log while we were there drawing at least one--though usually two--pictures per day. The trip was amazing, I cannot wait until I am able to go back. I think I was meant to be English.

Spent the weekend at Old Sturbridge Village as "Esther Howland, Mother of the American Valentine". A Worcester original, she popularized Valentines--and thus Valentine's Day--in America with her handmade cards from 1847-1881.

Here are a few 19th century valentines of my own making:

And since Esther Howland made valentines ranging from $.05 to $50, my attempt at a $.05 card (needless to say, not too many of these, which is to say, none I could find, exist in this price range):

So very kindly last year at Music and Arts--which was also a success this year--Walter made me a beautiful period sketchbook. This year I am finally getting a chance to really use it, drawing in costume in the village on slow days. I only have a few sketches so far, but I am hoping, if the weather improves, to increase that number very soon.

Music and Arts Weekend

This weekend June 19th-20th at Old Sturbridge Village, I will be cutting silhouettes in the Fitch House again. Needless to say, I am quite excited:

And in other news I am trying to get back in the habit of daily sketchbooking. I am not quite there yet, but I am getting better. Look for those updates soon!

So I seemed to get very busy very recently so my painting got a little delayed, but I am hoping to have it finished by this evening. So, working my in progress complete with coleus plant propping my illustration board up:

Trying to come up with a good front image for my postcard, here are a few sketches of ideas. I am leaning towards the top one if the finish comes out well. I just transfered it to illustration board yesterday.

Also, for those who follow these things, I got a job at Old Sturbridge Village--for the summer for now, but still--so expect more images of the village in the coming months.

Children's books, the Civil War and zombies

Montserrat Illustration Theme Show tonight! Theme: Zombies.

It would be a grave understatement to say Zombies are not my "thing" but regardless, I have submitted a piece and the opening should be fun, so go check it out.

My Submission (the cropping in the actual piece is better than the scan, but me and computers...):

The Civil War was a rough gig, and that was before the Confederacy started employing zombies! Raised in secret and fed off the amputated limbs of wounded soldiers the Georgia 1st Zombie Regiment would have been a force to be reckoned with if Major General Sherman had not burned them in their entirety during his famous "march to the sea" of 1864.

In other news, today I endeavor to start work on an Old Sturbridge Village/1830s Rural American colouring book, so that should be fun. I also have a plan for a kids book I would like to get some sketching done for. Mayhaps, this momentary dearth of inspiration has finally come to an end.

Oh, by jove it is! Ruddy luck that is, seems she never does them anymore.

Which is all too true. Art Education has me body and soul until December, at which point more posting should and shall be expected. As well, more commenting for I do miss talking about your artwork as well. Until then though, I give you one of a series of collages I am working on in my "free time" based off old cabinet photographs. Meghan is making sets as well and with any luck we might have a show of them before the year is out, so keep an eye out!

I am afraid that, with teaching practicum, my art output will be wanting for the semester. But come December, I will be finished with Art Education in its entirety and I will be able to dedicate my time fully to Illustration. Cheers!

As an update to this dear blog, I though I would post an in progress piece. I am in the process of redoing this vignette of a hat and hatbox I had done for Illustration Thesis last semester. Deciding what colour and pattern to make the hatbox is proving to be quite the trial though.
